Movement Mondays Session 1

Have you ever done the downward dog with a lion? How about sun salutations with an orangutan? Well, wait no longer–the Erie Zoo is debuting its newest event, Movement Mondays presented by Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield, a yoga experience that is truly WILD! Enter the zoo after hours to take a yoga unlike any other! Choose from four different classes: Walking Yoga, Chair Yoga, Slow & Mindful Yoga, or Vinyasa Yoga. Every other Monday starting on June 5th through August 21st at 6 PM you can join us at the Erie Zoo where we will be channeling our inner child and immersing ourselves in yoga practice amongst the lions, tigers, and red pandas! Whether this is your very first yoga class or your 100th there is a place for you in our programming.

Class Options: 

Slow & Mindful Yoga

Come see the difference slowing down can make. Slow, Mindful Yoga helps to regulate your nervous system and build resilience. Classes are inclusive and adaptive. Slow, Mindful Yoga includes slow, mindful movements, gentle flows, briefly held postures, and breathing practices (pranayama). Some classes may also include aromatherapy with essential oils, self-massage techniques, acupressure, and guided meditation.

What to Bring: Yoga mat, blanket, and water

Time: 5:30pm-7pm (check in at 5:15pm)

About the Instructor: Amy VanScoter has been practicing yoga for more than 25 years and teaching for 15 years. She has studied many different traditions of yoga over the years and currently teaches yogic meditation and Slow, Mindful Yoga exclusively.

She received her yoga teacher training certification in 2008 from Subtle Yoga in Asheville, NC, with Kristine Kaoverii Weber, with whom she continually studies. She is registered as an experienced yoga teacher with Yoga Alliance. 

Amy provides a safe environment with adaptable, inclusive classes that focus on yoga as a complete system. Amy teaches private and group classes in several locations so you can choose where you feel most comfortable practicing.

Chair Yoga

Chair yoga at the Erie Zoo utilizes picnic tables for support in our yoga flow. "Why would I want to sit at yoga when I just sat all day?" With our chair yoga flow, we use the picnic tables for added support and balance as much or as little as you need. Come join me at the Rotary Pavilion at Erie Zoo for Movement Mondays to enjoy a yoga flow your body will thank you for.

What to Bring: Please bring a water bottle, comfortable shoes, and a smile.

About the Instructor: Introducing, Kimber Gavio of Balancing Dragon Yoga. Balancing Dragon Yoga was born out of a profound appreciation and love of yoga. I created this practice to invite and encourage others to join in the acceptance of themselves through yoga.

 

Walking Yoga

Billy of Serene Bear Yoga is helping you find your inner child by putting together two fun activities each session, walking through the Erie Zoo and doing yoga! This unique program combines short sections of mindful walking alternating with short flows of standing yoga postures.  We will wind our way through the zoo, enjoying the views and finding some inner calm at the same time. Comfortable clothes and shoes are all you need. Our rain location will be the Carousel pavilion so we can keep the fun going.

About the Instructor: Billy Kuntz, RYT 200, has been practicing yoga for 15 years and began teaching in 2019. Billy has a passion for creating moments of total wellness combining his passions for yoga, food, cooking and helping others to create their own path.  Billy created his practice, Serene Bear Yoga as an extension of his own healing after back injury with a focus on practical, functional movement making his classes accessible to the widest range of the community offering regular Chair Assisted and Multilevel classes. Vinyasa Yoga

Dates of sessions: Mondays, June 5th, July 10th, July 24th, August 7th, and August 21st.

Class Description: Vinyasa yoga is a style of yoga that connects breath and movement. Often referred to as 1 breath, 1 movement. The practice generally flows from 1 pose to the next connected and led by the breath.

What to Bring: Please come comfortably dressed, with a yoga mat, blanket or two, a small pillow for neck support if needed, a strap, and blocks if you use them. Let's enjoy spending time on our mats together, with an open heart and mind.

About the Instructor: Terry Henry, C-IAYT, ERYT-500, is a Yoga Therapist who teaches classes at Gannon University Rec Center and the Barefoot Buddha Yoga Studio. She sees clients in a private setting for therapeutic yoga. Terry has been practicing yoga since 2003. She especially enjoys introducing yoga to new participants. She teaches vinyasa-style yoga, chair, meditation and restorative yoga in a class setting, small groups, and private one-to-one sessions. Terry looks forward to doing yoga at the Erie Zoo, along with her fellow yoga teachers.

Class Description: Karen will offer an All Levels Breathcentric Fun Flow Classes

What to Bring: A mat, hand towel, water, and your happy self. *Sunscreen too if needed

About the Instructor: Karen's love for yoga began in the late '60s and she has taught over 25,000 classes to all levels of students, including Seniors, Pool, Chair, Traumatic Brain Injury, M.S., Parkinson's, and Cancer Classes, and offers corporate classes in yoga, mindfulness, and stress relief. She is an E-RYT500, a Certified Yoga Therapist, C-IAYT, and the Director of The Barefoot Buddha Yoga Studio, where she offers private sessions and groups.
