If you prune Royal Purple Smoketree (Cotinus coggygria 'Royal Purple') to the ground in late winter, it will grow vigorous shoots that are more vibrant in color with larger leaves in the spring.

Long purple hairs grow out of flower pedicels and peduncles in smoke-like puffs that cover these shrubs from June to September. Maroon-purple leaves turn crimson in the autumn.
Pests & Diseases
None serious, but susceptible to rust, leaf spots, and wilt.
Landscape Use
Great as a specimen, shrub border, accent, hedge, and screen
Care Practices
Plant in full sun in moist, well-drained soil. These shrubs tolerate a range of acidity and soil types, but can not tolerate standing water.
