Erie Zoo to pursue Reaccreditation
Erie, PA -- The Erie Zoo confirms the loss of accreditation by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. While saddened by the news, the zoo team chooses to look at this as a learning opportunity, keeping their focus on providing excellent animal care and conservation education, while working on sustainable growth and advancement. The earliest the zoo can apply for reaccreditation is September of 2022.
The Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) is a non-profit organization that evaluates and assists in the advancement of animal facilities with a focus on “conservation, education, science and recreation”. Out of 2,800 USDA - licensed wildlife exhibitors, only about 10% meet the more comprehensive standards of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
Emily Smicker, a spokesperson for the Erie Zoo, stated, “We have taken great pride in meeting AZA standards for accreditation for the last 37 years. We are proud of our long-term partnership with them and are determined to take a hard look at the suggestions provided to us. We choose to look at this as a learning experience and will continue to provide quality animal care as we move forward.”
With regards to the Erie Zoo, numerous points of exemplary work were praised by AZA including the continued excellence in animal care provided by a passionate and dedicated staff at the facility. Recognition was made of the important work and success the facility does regarding conservation and participation in Species Survival Programs (SSPs).
The Erie Zoo will continue to work with experts within AZA to reach reaccreditation. Loss of accreditation will not affect daily operations, visitor experience, or conservation efforts at the zoo.
