ERIE ZOO AWARED $2 MILLION DOLLARS OF STATE FUNDS STATE INVESTMENT WILL SUPPORT NEW VETERINARY CENTER
ERIE, PA (November 1, 2024) – The Erie Zoo is proud to announce it has been awarded a $2 million grant from the Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP) today. The RACP grant is a competitive state grant awarded to projects with economic, cultural, civic, recreational and historical value.
“The Erie Zoo is in a transformative phase as we look toward our next 100 years, and this investment brings us one step closer to achieving a state-of-the-art veterinary center,” said Erie Zoo CEO Roo Kojancie, “While we explore partnerships to increase operational stability, this investment demonstrates that the Zoo is a treasured asset worth investing in for the next generation.”
The $2 million RACP grant requires an additional $2 million match in funding and will support the construction of a brand-new veterinary center for the Zoo, required for AZA accreditation. This award means 50% of the funds required for the project have been secured.
This center will create a stand-alone space for all the Zoo’s veterinary needs (which are currently located throughout the campus). The facility will include features such as quarantine, isolation, and treatment areas as well as advanced, top-level imaging and surgical suites.
“Like many non-profits, post-covid, the Zoo has faced financial strain; however, we continue to position the Zoo for long-term operational sustainability, ensuring a new era of growth,” said Roo Kojancie. “One of our biggest fundraisers, Zoo Boo, is a shining example of the community’s long-standing support having attracted over 21,000 visitors in just two weeks.”
Currently, the Zoo generates 95% of its operational funding, receiving only 5% from the public sector. To ensure long-term operational stability, the Zoo is exploring a strategic partnership with Erie Events.
The Erie Zoo expresses gratitude to Governor Shapiro, the PA Office of the Budget and all local elected officials in Harrisburg who made this grant possible. The Zoo has been the recipient of previous RACP grants, with the most recent grant supporting the North American River Otter Exhibit Project.
The mission of the Erie Zoo is to foster appreciation of nature through memorable experiences and meaningful action.
