In response to the directive addressing the Covid-19 (coronavirus) situation issued by Governor Tom Wolf, effective today, Tuesday March 16th, your Erie Zoo will be CLOSED for a minimum of two weeks. Please check our Facebook and website for up to date information as the situation progresses.

Covid-19 Prevention Measures

UPDATE: Your Erie Zoo is now temporarily closed.

At this time the Erie Zoo will remain open daily 10am-5pm as normal. Presently there are no cases of Covid-19 in the Erie area and we feel is safe to keep our gates open at this time.

Erie Zoo’s giraffe, Nigel, to leave for Midwest

Nigel, a 9-year-old giraffe, will leave the zoo at the end of this month, Scott Mitchell, Erie Zoological Society president and CEO, said on Thursday.

Nigel is leaving Erie for a zoo in the Midwest, Mitchell said. As part of the Erie Zoo’s $10 million capital campaign, Wild Open Spaces, it plans to make a larger and more interactive giraffe exhibit with a herd of giraffes, he explained.
